Salary sacrifice to pension

Benefits Store & Wellness 6 min readUpdated yesterday

Put part of your gross salary into your pension every month. How to start, change and stop a salary sacrifice, add a one-time contribution, what the pension company is told, and the limits worth knowing.

A salary sacrifice (löneväxling) moves part of your gross salary into your occupational pension every month. Your employer takes the amount off your gross salary on every payslip and pays it into your pension with their pension company instead. Because the amount is taken before tax, your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you sacrifice.

You only see this if your employer has turned it on. If the Pension page says that no part of Pension is turned on, ask your HR team.

Start a salary sacrifice

1

Open Benefits Store and select Pension. The page starts with Your pension today: the arrangement you are on and what your employer pays into it.

2

Under Add to your pension, pick Every month from salary if your employer also offers a one-time contribution. Enter the Amount a month in whole kronor. The page shows the range your employer allows.

3

Pick the First month. This is the payslip with the first deduction. The list starts at the earliest month your employer allows.

4

Read What you agree to beside the form, tick I have read the terms and agree to them and select Start salary sacrifice.

The panel beside the form shows what changes: your gross salary before and after, and what goes into your pension each month.

What happens next

Nobody needs to approve it.

  1. We email your employer's pension company to open the extra premium from the month you picked. Your HR team gets a copy.
  2. You get an email too, saying the month it starts.
  3. The first deduction is on your payslip for the month you picked, and on every payslip after that.

The pension company does not reply. It opens the premium from the month in the email, backdated if it gets to it late.

Follow it on the Pension card on Me. It shows the status, the amount, the next deduction, the pension company and what has been paid in so far. Open History to see every step and every email sent to the pension company.

You can have one monthly salary sacrifice at a time.

The amount comes off your gross salary every month

The amount is a gross salary deduction on every payroll month until you change or stop it. It runs on its own: you do not need to do anything each month.

  • Your employer may add a top-up. Your employer pays less in employer contributions on pension than on salary, so many pass the difference on: typically 5.8% on top of what you sacrifice. Sacrifice 2 000 kr and 2 116 kr goes into your pension. The card shows the top-up when your employer adds one.
  • Your pension and salary reviews use your salary before the exchange. Your ordinary occupational pension and your salary reviews are worked out on your salary as if there were no salary sacrifice.
  • It ends when you leave or retire. What you have paid in stays in your pension.

Stay above 8.07 income base amounts

The state counts your salary up to 8.07 income base amounts a year for your state pension: 56 087 kr a month in 2026. If your salary after the sacrifice stays above that, your state pension does not change. If it drops below, the state counts a bit less, and you earn a little less state pension.

Sick pay and parental pay from Försäkringskassan have a lower cap: 10 price base amounts a year, 49 333 kr a month in 2026. They only drop if your salary after the sacrifice is under that.

The page warns you when either happens, and tells you the amount that avoids it. Select Read more in the warning for the rules behind it. You can still go ahead.

The most you can sacrifice

Your employer can only deduct pension premiums up to 35% of your pensionable salary, and at most 10 price base amounts a year (592 000 kr in 2026). Your ordinary occupational pension counts toward that limit too. The page works out the most you can sacrifice a month and does not let you start more. Your employer may also set its own minimum and maximum.

If we do not have your salary on file, the page cannot check these limits for you. Ask your HR team if you are unsure.

Change the amount

On the Pension card on Me, select Change amount. Enter the New amount a month and pick the month it applies From, then select Send change. We email the pension company the new amount and the month, and the new amount is on your payslip from that month. Until then, the old amount is deducted.

Your employer decides the notice for a change or a stop, from none to three months. The earliest month you can pick follows from it.

Stop it

On the Pension card, select Stop salary sacrifice. The panel names the salary sacrifice you are stopping and its amount. Pick the month it stops From: the first month with no deduction. The panel says which payslip has your last deduction. Select Stop salary sacrifice to confirm.

We email the pension company the month, and you get an email too. After the last deduction your gross salary goes back to what it was, and what you have paid in stays in your pension.

If you stop it before its first month, it never starts and nothing is deducted.

To start again later, select Start a new salary sacrifice on the card.

One-time contribution

Your employer may also let you put part of one month's gross salary into your pension, once. On the Pension page pick Once from salary, enter the Amount, once and pick the Month. Read the terms, tick the box and select Send one-time contribution.

It works like a salary sacrifice for one month only. Nobody needs to approve it. We email the pension company the amount and the month, your HR team gets a copy, and the amount comes off that month's payslip before tax. It does not use your benefit allowance.

The most you can put in once is that month's salary after any monthly salary sacrifice, and what is left of the year's 35% limit. The page works it out for you.

You see each one-time contribution under One-time on the Pension card on Me. Until its month you can Cancel it there, and we email the pension company that it is off.

Troubleshooting

  • The page says the amount is too high. It is above your employer's maximum or the 35% limit. Enter a lower amount.
  • The page says you already have a salary sacrifice. Change or stop the one you have on the Pension card on Me.
  • My first deduction is not on the payslip. Check the month on the Pension card: the first deduction is on the payslip for the month you picked. Ask your HR team if it is missing from that payslip.
