Apply for compassionate leave

Benefits Store & Wellness 3 min readUpdated yesterday

Some employers give you compassionate leave days each year. How to apply for one day or a longer absence, how the days are counted, and what happens after you send it.

Compassionate leave: days off your employer gives you each year for times when you need to be away, with no reason asked. If your employer offers it, you apply in CLVR and someone approves it.

It's not a purchase. Nothing comes off your benefit allowance. Nothing shows among your expenses, and nothing reaches your payslip. The request is the record that you asked and got an answer.

Find it

Open Benefits Store, then the Time off category, then Compassionate leave. If your employer doesn't offer it, it's not in the store.

Apply for one day or a longer absence

At the top, Your compassionate leave shows how many days you have left, for example 3 of 5 days left. It also shows the leave year the days belong to.

1
Select a day in the calendar for a one-day request.
2
For a longer absence, select the first day, then the last day. The days between are included.
3
Check the number of days shown by the calendar. That's what comes off your balance.
4
Add a comment if you want, under Comment (optional). You don't have to give a reason.
5
Select Send request.

How the days are counted

Only weekdays count. Away from a Friday to the next Monday is four days on the calendar, but two off your balance. The page tells you how many weekend days it doesn't count, before you send.

Public holidays in your dates do count as leave. Some employers also offer Röda dagar, in the same category, for moving a public holiday.

The rules

  • You can apply for dates that have passed. Compassionate leave is often taken first and reported later.
  • A request can't run from one leave year into the next. If your dates cross into the next leave year, send one request for each year.
  • Days in a waiting request are held. A request waiting for a decision counts against your balance, like an approved one.
  • You can't apply twice for the same days. If your dates overlap a request you've already sent, the page tells you.

After you send it

Your request goes to the people who approve compassionate leave at your company. You get a notification in CLVR when it's approved or declined, with their note if they wrote one.

Lower down the page, Your requests this leave year lists everything you've applied for. You see whether each one is waiting, and any note from the person who decided.

Troubleshooting

  • I can't select the days I want. The calendar only offers dates in the current leave year, shown above it. Come back for the next leave year once it has started.
  • It says I don't have enough days left. The balance above the calendar is what's left after your approved and waiting requests. Pick fewer days, or ask HR if the number looks wrong.
  • It says I already have a request for some of those days. It's listed under Your requests this leave year. Pick other dates.
  • I can't find Compassionate leave in the store. Not every employer offers it. If yours does, ask HR to check that it's turned on.
