How email relates to your in-app review notifications

Notifications 3 min readUpdated 5 days ago

Why a few events email you as well as showing in the app, while most notifications wait for you only inside CLVR.

Most of what CLVR tells you stays inside the app: it shows up next to Notifications in your profile menu and on the Notifications page, with nothing landing in your inbox. A small number of events are the exception and send a separate email as well, so you do not have to be in the app to notice them. This article explains which events email you, which do not, and why the two never get out of sync.

What is in-app only

The everyday updates live only in the app. The clearest example is a decision on your own expense report: when a reviewer approves or declines something you submitted, you get an in-app UPDATE notification, and no email is sent for it. To see the outcome and any reason given, open the Notifications page or find the report under My Benefits.

So if you are waiting to hear back on an expense you uploaded, check the app rather than your inbox.

What can also email you

Two events send a companion email alongside the in-app notification:

  • Being added as a reviewer. When you are assigned to review a colleague's expense report, you get an ADDED AS REVIEWER notification in the app. If your company is set up to send review emails, you also receive a Review expense email. Its link opens the very same report on your Notifications page.
  • Submitting an expense. When you upload your own expense report, you get a confirmation email, and the report appears under My Benefits with a Pending status.
Note.

The email and the in-app notification are two separate things pointing at the same item. Reading the email does not clear the in-app notification, and clearing it in the app does not delete the email. For a review, handling either one is enough: leaving your decision in the app clears the ADDED AS REVIEWER notification whichever way you opened it.

Why the app is the source of truth

An email is a one-time copy sent at the moment something happened; it does not update afterwards. The app always shows the current state. If a report you were emailed about has since been finalised by another reviewer, opening the Review expense link still takes you to the live report on the Notifications page, where the label will simply show that nothing is left for you to do.

When in doubt, open the app. The Notifications page and My Benefits reflect the latest status, even when an older email in your inbox does not.

Troubleshooting

  • I got a review email but the app shows nothing to do. Another reviewer may have already finalised the report. The ADDED AS REVIEWER label will show greyed out rather than orange, and there is nothing left for you.
  • I am waiting for an email about my own expense decision. There is no email for that event. Open the Notifications page or My Benefits to see whether a reviewer has approved or declined it.
  • I never get review emails, only in-app notifications. Companion review emails depend on your company's setup. The in-app ADDED AS REVIEWER notification always appears, so work from the Notifications page. If you would like email reminders too, ask your HR team.
