Company files: allowed types and size limits

Files 2 min readUpdated 5 days ago

The file formats Company Files accepts, the 10 MB per-file cap, and what to do when a file is rejected.

The Company Files area accepts a fixed set of document and image formats and caps each file at 10 MB. This article lists the allowed types, explains the notice you see when a file is rejected, and shows how to get a blocked file in.

Allowed file types

When you upload to Company Files, these formats go through:

  • PDF (.pdf)
  • Excel (.xlsx, .xls)
  • CSV (.csv)
  • Word (.docx, .doc)
  • Apple iWork (.pages, .numbers, .keynote)
  • Images (.png, .jpg, .jpeg)

You can see this same list any time without leaving the page: select the Supported files link next to the upload area and a small panel lists every accepted extension.

Tip.

The list comes straight from the app, so it is always current. If a format is not on it, it will not upload, even if the file looks fine on your computer.

The 10 MB per-file limit

Each individual file must be 10 MB or smaller. The upload area shows Max file size: 10MB right below it, and a file over that size is turned away before it uploads.

This is separate from your company's overall storage allowance, which covers all files together. For that, see the storage limit article in Related.

What a rejected file looks like

  • Unsupported format. You get a red Invalid file type notice that lists the allowed extensions. Nothing is uploaded.
  • Over 10 MB. The file is refused by the upload area and does not start uploading.

Previewing files

How a file opens depends on its type:

  • PDFs and images open in a built-in preview inside CLVR, so people can read them without downloading.
  • All other types (Excel, CSV, Word, iWork) download to the device when opened, then open in the matching app.

Worth knowing when you decide what to share: a PDF or image is the most convenient for employees because it previews in place.

Troubleshooting

  • A file will not upload. Check it is one of the allowed types above and is 10 MB or smaller.
  • My file is the wrong format. Save or export it as PDF (works for almost anything) or, for data, as CSV or Excel, then upload again.
  • My file is over 10 MB. Compress it, or split it into smaller files each under 10 MB, and upload them separately.
  • It uploaded but employees cannot preview it. Only PDFs and images preview in place. For a spreadsheet or document, that is expected: it downloads when opened.
